This Indiana University proposal was the sweetest surprise. When Patrick reached out and asked if I could capture him popping the question to Maura, I was thrilled. Not only did he plan to propose in front of the iconic Sample Gates, but he chose a Christmas setting, when the gates look their most festive. This was my second time photographing a Sample Gates engagement, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best backdrops on IU’s campus. Read on for the highlights from this memorable afternoon!
Sample Gates Proposal at Indiana University
The IU campus was more than just a picturesque location for Patrick’s proposal. It was deeply meaningful, too. The couple, both alums, met while they were students there. Although they no longer live in Bloomington, they love returning to the place where their love story began whenever they can. Planning a weekend getaway to Bloomington turned out to be the perfect cover for Patrick’s surprise proposal at Sample Gates.
Planning a proposal at Sample Gates can be a bit of a logistical challenge. The campus is a public space, so reserving or sectioning off an area isn’t possible. The gates are also a popular photography spot, which means pulling off a seamless proposal without asking others to move requires careful observation and precise timing.
In the end, everything came together perfectly. Maura said yes, and we followed the proposal with a short but sweet engagement session around the IU campus. We revisited meaningful spots from their student days, including Rose Well House and the Stone Arch Bridge. As they strolled hand in hand, shared giddy laughter, and admired Maura’s ring, it was clear how special this place—and this moment—was to them.
