The proposal is one of the most memorable milestones in any couple’s relationship. And one of the best ways to preserve that moment forever is with professional proposal photography.
Bennett did just that before his proposal at Oliver Winery in Bloomington, surprising his longtime girlfriend, Kay. I was thrilled to capture such a special moment for them—especially since it wasn’t my first proposal at Oliver Winery. With its peaceful pond, shady trees, and scenic wooded pathways, the winery is one of my favorite locations for a romantic Bloomington proposal.
Planning a Proposal at Oliver Winery
Bennett knew that pulling off a successful surprise proposal would take some thoughtful planning. A week before the proposal, he and a friend visited Oliver Winery to scout the perfect location for the big moment. Afterward, we talked through the plan over the phone, and Bennett texted me photos of the spot he had in mind so I’d know exactly where to position myself on the day of the proposal.
Of course, even the best plans sometimes need to change—and that’s okay.
When the day arrived, the weather was hot, humid, and sunny. Together, we decided on a new location with plenty of shade that would be much more comfortable for Bennett and Kay. I adjusted my position, and we were ready to go. As an Indiana wedding photographer, I’m used to unpredictable Midwest weather, and having a backup plan is often part of the process. No matter what changes, my goal is always the same: to capture beautiful, authentic moments.
A Romantic Pondside Proposal at Oliver Winery
To get Kay to Oliver Winery without raising suspicion, Bennett enlisted her friends’ help with planning a girls’ day at the winery. Then, at just the right moment, Bennett appeared across the pond to surprise her.
The new proposal location couldn’t have been more perfect. The trees cast beautiful dappled shade across the lawn, while the pond created a picturesque backdrop as Bennett got down on one knee and asked Kay to marry him. Capturing Kay’s reaction was so much fun—it was a complete surprise, and of course, she said “yes!”
Celebrating Their New Engagement
After the proposal, we wandered through the beautiful grounds of Oliver Winery, capturing romantic engagement portraits around the property. Once we finished, Bennett and Kay met up with her friends at the tasting room to celebrate.
I still smile when I think about how perfectly the day came together. Even with a last-minute location change, Bennett pulled off an unforgettable surprise, and now they have beautiful photographs to help them relive that moment for years to come.
