Kathleen and Sam’s wedding at Clayshire Castle was the definition of fun! The couple fully embraced a medieval theme that fit the venue perfectly. The theme and venue were also a nod to their love story: the couple met through the fencing club at Indiana University Bloomington and soon became part of the same, Dungeons and Dragons-playing friend group. As their wedding photographer, I had a blast tagging along for this one-of-a-kind celebration.
Wedding at Clayshire Castle
Clayshire Castle was the perfect setting for this medieval-themed wedding. The venue is in rural West Indiana, near McCormick’s Creek, one of the nation’s oldest state parks. In addition to being a unique event space, the Castle is a top-rated bed and breakfast! Many features make this venue special, but the beautiful countryside stands out the most. There is also a life-size chess board, a hedge maze, and a room full of medieval-inspired costumes for your guests to don.
Medieval-Themed Wedding
Due to their shared love of the era, Kathleen and Sam wanted a wedding that harkened back to medieval times. The owner of Clayshire Castle, also a medieval enthusiast, was more than happy to help them bring their vision to life! He officiated their wedding ceremony and even dressed in period-appropriate attire. Another medieval-inspired feature was the handfasting ceremony which succeeded the couple’s exchange of rings. The couple bound their hands with a beautiful cord dyed in rich jewel tones to match their wedding decor. The cord represented their forever commitment to each other as they officially became husband and wife!
I love it when couples remain true to their love story while planning their wedding, and Kathleen and Sam fit that bill to a tee! While cookie-cutter weddings can look lovely, the most heartfelt wedding days—like this one—are completely customized to the couple. I take the same approach with wedding photography!
