How to prepare for your engagement session in Indianapolis
An engagement session is included in the wedding packages I offer. I love it when couples decide to do this. Engagement sessions are less stressful than the wedding day and this gives us a chance to get to know one another.
If you are like most couples, you have probably not taken any professional photos since high school or maybe not at all. You might even feel uncomfortable with a camera pointed at you and that is okay. I am there to make you feel comfortable and make it less awkward and less stressful. Engagement sessions are a way to overcome anxiety and a great way to learn about both your personalities and how to best capture them. You will also get a feel of how I work as a photographer so you can feel prepared for your wedding day!
Engagement Session Location
By now you know I love natural light and shooting in that type of lighting makes beautiful photos. But I don’t want you to think that you can’t have beautiful photos in an indoor space, you definitely can! The important thing is for you to choose a location that is meaningful to you. This could be your home or your first date. Or even your favorite part of the city where you live! Whatever you decide, make sure it reflects your personality. If you are not sure, I’d be happy to help choose a location for you. I have quite a few in Bloomington and Indianapolis I love!
Outfits
Choosing what to wear is important. Colors, patterns, and textures should compliment your location and each other but at the same time dress like yourself. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. Soft, flowy dresses always make for great pictures, since you can really play around and have fun! When it comes to colors, make sure to keep it on the neutral end – nothing neon or too bright. If you need any tips, ask me! If you send photos, I’ll be happy to give you my opinions.
Timing
Time of day is so important. I could photograph all hours of the day including the middle of the day with harsh lighting. While I could create beautiful photos in that situation, harsh lighting can create shadows on your face. I recommend starting 30 – 45 minutes before sunrise, or before sunset, during that time the lighting is best. That way there are no shadows, and there is a glow that makes everything look soft and pretty!
Pets
Pets are part of your family and they are just as important and always encourage that they are included in your session. To make sure the session goes well, it is always a good idea to have a person to help out in case something goes wrong, even though your pet is well behaved. Come prepared with treats and squeaky toys to get their attention!

I always tell my clients to have fun, relax and enjoy the moment. I am there to make sure you look your best and I’ll make sure you have a good time. So much of my job is to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. So come as you are and with a positive attitude, and we will have so much fun! I know that not everyone loves to be in front of the camera, but after a few minutes of working together, you will forget it’s a photoshoot.
