I’m stoked to share this interview with DJ Ryan “Mac” McDonald of Indianapolis-based MAC Events! Recently, I worked alongside Mac when I photographed Alyssa and Nick’s wedding at Grand Hall at Union Station. I was amazed by the number of guests on the dance floor! Right then and there, I knew I had to get the scoop from Mac himself on how he creates such a fun atmosphere and what couples should look for in a wedding DJ. Here’s what he shared with me!

What should couples look for when hiring a wedding DJ?
More than anything else, they should feel comfortable with that person playing a significant role on their wedding day. They should also feel like the person is a good fit to handle their timeline and MC-ing while creating a vibe that translates their vision into reality. Will the person honor their vision and cater to their wants, or will they go rogue? Also, will the couple be able to select their music and have a say in what’s played and what isn’t?
Why do you think couples need a DJ at their wedding?
DJs help create a distinct vibe and energy. Many couples believe a photographer is the most essential since they capture life-long memories, but a DJ is the one who helps create those memories to capture.
What is your favorite category of music to play?
I LOVE hip-hop from the ‘90s and ‘00s. I can mix almost anything, but when I see that era of hip-hop on a playlist, I get a little extra happy inside!
What is your performance style?
I am an open-format DJ! I can mix and spin numerous genres, from country to disco to hip-hop. Anything is fair game for the dance floor! I strive to bring a fun, upbeat atmosphere to every event I’m part of.
Can a couple watch you at another event?
At a public event, anyone is welcome. However, at a private event like a wedding, we don’t allow outside individuals to observe out of respect for our clients.
How do you encourage a shy crowd to fill up the dance floor?
I have a few tricks up my sleeve! Mostly I’ll try to nail down the right genre for opening the dance floor. I’ll closely observe cocktail hour and dinner to see if guests react to a specific song or genre that may help open things up.
