The Best Months to Get Married in Indianapolis

Wedding Tips

As an Indianapolis wedding photographer, I’ve discovered the best months to get married here. Since any month has pros and cons, it’s helpful to determine your priorities before setting a date. Is it a backdrop of beautiful fall leaves for your portraits? Or is it a backyard barbecue-style reception with all of your loved ones?

Try listing everything out. You may find that one of the “peak” months speaks to you the most. Or, perhaps you would prefer to save money by hosting your wedding in the “off-season.” It’s all a matter of personal preference! With that said, here are the top two months to get married in Indianapolis, straight from a photographer.

June

This month marks the official start of summer, bringing lengthy hours of daylight and warm (sometimes hot!) weather. June is a popular wedding month since many folks vacation around this time. If your guests don’t live in the area, they may feel more inclined to travel in the warmer months. Plus, if you’re a teacher, hosting your wedding when you’re already on summer vacation is a no-brainer!

If you have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, you can’t go wrong in choosing June as your wedding month. However, be careful when booking your venue. A shaded location, or a venue with at least some covered surfaces, is necessary to ensure your guests don’t overheat! I also suggest having a drink station at the ceremony, so guests can get water, tea, or lemonade before the ceremony starts or have it setup as guests enter the cocktail hour. You can also have some champagne ready for them to celebrate with!

In addition, note that since June is one of the best months to get married, you can expect to pay more to book your venue than at other times of the year. It’s one of the most popular months to get married, so book your venue (and vendors!) early if you are planning a June wedding.

October

There’s a reason that October is also one of the most popular wedding months. The leaves are just starting to turn in October. The golden hues that make fall in the Midwest so iconic will fill your portraits (and your ceremony backdrop if you’re hosting it outside). However, the weather is chillier, and sometimes it can be a bit unpredictable. So, if you’re hosting an October wedding, don’t forget to instruct your guests to dress in layers and bring an umbrella, just in case! You’ll also need a backup plan for any outdoor portions of the day.

If you plan any outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour, ask your venue if they have any propane heaters to warm up the space. Or consider having everything inside, and just your portraits outdoors.

As a wedding photographer, October is usually the month on my calendar that fills up the fastest. My clients love the colorful backdrop of the leaves! However, if you plan to tie the knot in an area where fall weddings are popular (like Indianapolis), you’ll want to get the ball rolling on planning MUCH sooner than you might expect. The last thing you want is to miss out on the best venues and vendors because they’re all booked! Also, note that many vendors will raise their prices at the last minute in response to the demand—another reason why booking sooner is best.
