One of my favorite trends is at-home lifestyle engagement and couples sessions! Often, couples think that they need a big event to have a photoshoot. Or that they need to keep it super formal. And while I love photographing it all, I’m here to let you know that you deserve photos in whatever style you want! This is also great for couples who are a little nervous in front of the camera and want to be a little more casual. Just the two of you, cuddling in your home – it’s the best!
Over last summer, I went to Oregon for three days of incredible shoots. One of them was of the sweet couple, Maddie and Gustavo! These two are oh-so in love, and you can see it from every image. We shot at a cute cabin close to Nehalem River in Seaside, Oregan about 33 minutes to Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park, and took some couple’s pictures on the porch. This was my first time along the Oregon coast, and it was a dream come true! The cabin is nestled in the woods but is just a short walk from coastal views. Today, I wanted to share a few tips on having a session at home!
Find A Space With Natural Light
When having an at-home engagement session, you need to make sure there is plenty of natural light. Take a look at which rooms get the best light, and at what times, that way, we focus on those. Kitchens, patios, and living rooms are often the best. We chose to do their shoot on the patio for Maddie and Gustavo since the cabin was darker inside.
Bring In Some Props
If you have any fun props, like coffee mugs you love, or a cozy blanket, have it on hand! But make sure the room is clear of any clutter. You want the setting to reflect your style but not have too many items that take away from the focus of you two. Maddie and Gustavo chose to enjoy a cup of coffee together and cuddle up under a fun blanket. It added just enough detail without being overwhelming!
Pick Coordinating Colors
Like I mentioned in my blog post on what to wear to your engagement session, you don’t have to match perfectly, but coordinating is key! This couple chose a classic look: blue jeans and a white shirt. Avoid bright colors, or tiny prints, since those can look distracting on camera.
