Are you thinking of planning a wedding weekend in Indianapolis? As an Indianapolis wedding photographer, my wedding weekend clients often ask me, “What can our out-of-town guests do while they’re here?” Well, besides watching you get married, there are so many fun activities in our city! This blog includes some of my favorite restaurants, sightseeing, and must-do adventures for a fun and memorable wedding weekend in Indianapolis.
Even if you’re hosting an entire wedding weekend in Indianapolis, your guests will likely fly in the day before. It’s helpful to include some places for them to visit and try local food. I highly recommend the Mass Ave Cultural Arts District! This strip in downtown Indianapolis is bursting at the seams with unique food options. There is a restaurant for everyone, from vegan options to burgers and breweries. Not to mention the beautiful architecture and colorful street art!
If your guests only have a few days to explore the city, here are my must-see recommendations. The first is White River State Park. This 267-acre park provides a little nature escape in the heart of the city. Enjoy the grassy fields, picnic benches, and riverwalks. Guests can also spend some time at the zoo, theater, or Hall of Champions!
Next is the Indiana State Museum. This museum is actually located within White River State Park but deserves its own mention. While dedicated to showcasing Indiana’s history, the state museum has many exhibits and attracts art, history, and science lovers.
Another favorite museum in Indianapolis is Newfields! This gorgeous art museum is also well-known for its garden. Beauty lovers of all kinds will enjoy the expansive grounds, multiple galleries, and rotating exhibits. Newfields is a popular location for special events, and I’ve shot a few weddings and engagements there! Read this blog to see more photos from a stunning Newfields engagement session.
Lastly, did you really visit Indianapolis if you didn’t see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Home of the Indy 500, the Speedway is an Indianapolis icon. If you visit while there are no races, you can visit the speedway and museum!
I love this city, and I think Indianapolis is a perfect place for a wedding weekend. You could even include some of these attractions as part of your wedding festivities, like a rehearsal dinner at a restaurant on Mass Ave, or a welcome party at Newfields! There are so many possibilities, and every couple can create a weekend itinerary that feels true to them.
