As a wedding photographer, I love capturing every part of a couple’s special day. And that includes the wedding day details! From the carefully chosen attire to priceless family heirlooms, it all tells a one-of-a-kind story.
However, between pre-wedding nerves and ticking off every box on their to-do list, I’ve witnessed many couples forget to prepare their details for photos (or worse, leave essential items off their packing list!). This guide to preparing wedding day details will ensure your photographer has everything they need to capture the detail shots and gorgeous flatlays of your dreams.
Wedding Day Details Checklist
Without every detail present and accounted for, your detail shots will portray an incomplete picture of your special day. Make a list for each partner, so that your photographer can capture both! Follow this checklist to ensure you bring everything your photographer needs to create wedding day magic:
- Bouquet and boutonniere. I recommend asking your florist for additional fresh blooms when they drop off the bouquets, so they can be used to style.
- Engagement ring
- Wedding bands
- Ring boxes
- Other jewelry or hairpieces
- Wedding day attire (e.g., dress, suit jacket, necktie, cuflinks)
- Shoes
- 2 copies of the invitation suite, including save the dates.
- Vow books
- Perfume or cologne
- Family heirlooms
- A nice wedding dress hanger (wooden, velvet, fabric, gold with your name, etc. Check Etsy for some beautiful options!)
- Guest welcome bags or favors if you have them
Additionally, consider where you will be getting ready, as your photographer will most likely shoot your details there. If the area lacks clean backdrops for flatlay photos, I recommend bringing ribbon or fabric swatches matching your wedding colors. These often make an even more beautiful backdrop to flatlays than the surfaces in the typical hotel room or bridal suite!
How to Prepare for Detail Shots
I usually ask couples to prepare everything in a box or bag that I can grab when I arrive. That way, I can start photographing those details before anything else. I typically do this while the couple finishes getting ready. Or, if I have a second shooter with me, I ask them to photograph the details while I photograph the getting ready portion of the day. Either way, I’ll ensure you get those must-have shots, including your invitation suite, rings, flowers, and attire!
